Newly relegated Walsall romped to their second successive win with striker Martin Butler paving the way for their comfortable success over Stockport.

The Hatters, meanwhile, are still without a point and could face another survival battle.

The much travelled Butler had made an immediate impact upon his return to Bescot and he has already proved his worth with two goals in the opening two matches.

Butler links up well with Hector Sam and on this latest performance is going to be a big asset to the Saddlers.

As early as the seventh minute he posted his danger to Stockport when he was brought down in the area by Gareth Owen only for the referee to refuse a penalty.
But he could not be denied and opened the scoring in the 16th minute. A pass from Danny Fox was knocked on by Sam and Butler applied the clinical finishing touch.

Only a fine reflex save by Jimmy Spencer prevented Butler adding to his tally when the Walsall marksman glided in a shot following a left wing cross from Kris Taylor.

Stockport were put out of their stride by Butler's fine finishing and took some time to get into their stride.

Manager Jim Gannon must of been pleased with the tenacious play of Ashley Williams and in particular Jason Taylor.

Taylor moved forward persistently from midfield and slowly control of the midfield as Walsall's Mark Kinsella and skipper Michael Dobson conceded the early advantage.

Michael Malcolm and Liam Dickenson provided some isolated Stockport attacks but they lacked the finishing power to really rock Walsall who went close to increasing their advantage when Sam clipped the cross bar just before the
interval.

But Stockport slumped to their second defeat in the space of four days when the game was effectively put out of their reach two minutes into the second half.

The unmarked Alan Roper converted a Kris Taylor right wing corner with a powerful header to mark his return to first team duty after a suspension.

Stockport had to operate a more attacking role following this second goal as Walsall were seemingly content to sit back on their lead.

Glenn Murray tested Clayton Ince but Stockport's first goal of the season continued to elude them despite sending on striker Adam Le Fondre in the closing stages.
