Eric Skora was the star performer at the Bescot Stadium as he marked his Walsall debut with a goal in a comfortable 2-0 win against Gillingham.

Saddlers boss Paul Merson was delighted with the loan signing's display and later admitted he would like to sign him, but feels Preston will want the Frenchman to return to Deepdale.

Another plus for Walsall was the display of Ishmel Demontagnac, who linked up with England's youth team after the game.

He opened the scoring after 15 minutes, with Skora making a bigger impact in the second half when he had every reason to be satisfied with his comeback game after surgery.

Gillingham, however, were unable to raise a positive challenge and Walsall took full advantage to collect a vital win to lift them up the table.

Demontagnac caught the eye in the early stages. The 17-year-old displayed plenty of promise on the left flank and took his first-half goal with the coolness of a veteran.

Gillingham, who have now failed to win away from home in their last 15 games, were sadly out of touch and were never able to control the midfield.

They were hardly expected to end their dismal run at Walsall as their last win against the Saddlers in the Midlands occurred way back in 1992.

The Gills were sadly off the pace as Walsall were generally in command of an indifferent game.

With veteran Mark Kinsella enjoying one of his better games Walsall set out their stall in the 15th minute when they took advantage of some slack Gillingham defensive play.

Andy Croft needlessly conceded a free-kick just inside the Walsall half. Chris Westwood's long free-kick sailed straight to Demontagnac, who coolly slotted the ball past Tony Bullock.

Gillingham's only real chance of an equaliser came three minutes into the second half when Paul Shields slipped the ball into the path of Matthew Jarvis who saw Irishman Joe Murphy make a brilliant save flinging himself to his left.

It proved to be an expensive miss as Walsall capitalised on the situation to put the game out of Gillingham's reach when Skora, who only arrived on loan from Preston on Friday, grabbed a 57th-minute goal.

Demontagnac provided the left-wing cross which was headed down by Jorge Leitao into the path of Skora to lash a low shot past Bullock.

In desperation Gillingham boss Neale Cooper drafted in Craig Stone, Frannie Collin and Neil Harris all at the same time, but they could make no difference to the outcome of the game.

Jorge Leitao went close to scoring in the closing stages when his diving header from a Demontagnac cross hit the base of the post.
