Super Saddlers down Magpies

Notts County's unbeaten start to the season came crashing to a halt as they lost in disappointing fashion to a spirited Walsall team who merited their 1-0 win.

The best chance of the opening exchanges fell to County in the fifth minute when an Alan Sheehan corner dropped to Dean Leacock, who smashed the ball wide of goal.

The visitors' first real threat came after 50 minutes when a clever ball into the box by Florent Cuvelier was flicked just wide by the lively Ashley Hemmings.

It was Hemmings who next went closest to breaking the deadlock when he skipped past a County challenge before cutting in from the right and curling a left-footed shot inches wide of the far post.

The lacklustre hosts struggled to put any chances together in the second half and paid the price 10 minutes from time when a Ben Purkiss free-kick was turned past Bartosz Bialkowski by Andy Butler, with substitute George Bowerman making sure after the ball had crossed the line.
