Macclesfield Town and Walsall face a first round FA Cup replay next Tuesday night at the Bescot Stadium after a frustrating stalemate in Cheshire.

The 0-0 draw leaves Macclesfield still without a win in 20 league and cup games this season and Paul Ince with a mountain to climb on all fronts.

Playing an attacking formation Macc dominated the opening exchanges and after only 90 seconds, on-loan centre-forward John Murphy broke past the covering defence only to power a 20-yard volley inches over the bar.

At the other end Danny Swailes had to head over his own bar as a dangerous cross came in from Dean Keates.

Another loanee, Simon Wiles, then twice delivered dangerous crosses only for Macc's attacking duo to fail to connect. The home side continued to press and in the 15th minute Kevin McIntyre blasted a powerful drive inches over the bar.

At the other end livewire striker Hector Sam looked the most dangerous player on the pitch, outpacing his marker in the 17th minute only to shoot wide of the upright from 20 yards.

Martin Bullock was the next to try his luck from long range, blasting a volley over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

However, Town began to lose their threat midway through the first half as Walsall began to dictate play and on the stroke of half-time Sam was unlucky not to score, when he again out-stripped his marker only to fire inches past the far post.

After the break Walsall had the better chances with full-back Danny Fox ghosting into the box only to head a bouncing cross straight at Macc keeper Jonathan Brain.

The game was interrupted midway through the second half when a barrage of balls were punted on to the ground from outside the stadium as local louts looked to get on the TV. But it caused more amusement than anger with the game only held up for two minutes.

Walsall were reduced to ten men in the 80th minute when full-back Craig Pead was sent off for a shin high tackle on Bullock.

However Macc could not make their man advantage tell and their only chance fell to Jordan Hadfield, who blasted a shot straight at Clayton Ince from the edge of the box in the 82nd minute.
