After a terrific win, Dick Dosh told Radio WM he'd celebrate with:

"a couple of beers, a few glasses of white, followed by a couple of red!"

Dean Keates kept alive Walsall's promotion hopes with a second-half penalty to earn the Saddlers their first home win over Chester since 1988.

It was a hard-won success in a game which neither side made any real impact in a dour encounter.

With only one win from their previous six games, a lethargic Walsall were desperate to maintain their second in the table position following a recent slump in form.

Walsall's failure to dominate struggling Chester, however, was a warning of just how difficult they may find it to maintain their present position.

Their main problem was a lack of penetration and the game struggled to get into gear before Keates settled the issue with a successful penalty for his ninth goal of the season.

Chester often used strong-arm tactics and it was ironic that their downfall was caused by a handling offence made by Laurence Wilson.

In a disappointing first-half, Chester carelessly wasted a gilt-edged chance to take an early lead. On a rare attack, Chris Holroyd cleverly slipped the ball into the path of Lee Steele who mis-cued his shot wide from just six yards.

Walsall's response was generally weak as they failed to get any of their efforts on target.

A reckless tackle by Chester's Dave Artell on Darren Wrack sparked off an ugly clash with punches being thrown. Referee Dave Foster surprisingly failed to take any action other than booking Artell.

Wrack, who has only recently returned to first team duty after breaking his leg at Yeovil last season, was subsequently forced to leave the field and replaced by Hector Sam.

It was Sam who produced Walsall's most positive goal-scoring attempt late in the first period with a rasping shot which whistled just wide of the post.

The lively Sam set up Dean Keates to create an opening for Martin Butler but the striker's shot on the turn went over the bar.

Just after the hour mark, Walsall keeper Clayton Ince made a fine save diving low to his right to keep out a Holroyd shot.

And a couple of minutes later Walsall took a 67th minute lead when Keates converted a penalty after Laurence Wilson had handled in a goalmouth scramble.

Sam was then unlucky to see his powerful shot smash against the post late on.
