Walsall remain on target for promotion after weathering a Darlington blitz to secure a point in a goalless draw at the 96.6 TFM Darlington Arena.

And while the point leaves Darlington in the play-off chase they should have won after pegging Walsall back in a one-sided second-half.

Darlington were out of luck when Ian Miller's looping header struck the post midway through the second-half.

And Darlington should already have been ahead by then for they also had the better of the first-half chances. Gregg Blundell saw his header cleared off the line by Walsall defender Craig Pead.

But Darlington were almost caught out when Kevin Harper crossed from the left only for top-scorer Martin Butler to fire wide of the goal.

The Quakers were soon back on the attack and on 43 minutes Julian Joachim was denied a goal against his former club when Clayton Ince saved his 25-yard drive.

Darlington took control in the second-half and Ince again showed safe handling when keeping out Micky Cummins' long-range effort.

However, Ince should have been beaten when Cummins met Dave Rowson's cross but headed straight at the keeper.

After Miller had hit the post Darlington stepped up a gear but Walsall defended stoutly for a hard-earned point.
