Blackpool won this battle of the relegation scrappers as veteran Steve Claridge made a start for his 19th league club.

The 39-year-old was brought in to add goals for Walsall but it was another on-loan striker, Gareth Williams, who made the difference.

Williams, starting his first full game after one goal in three substitute appearances since his move from Colchester, could have put Blackpool ahead in the first half.

On 31 minutes he was presented with a golden opportunity when a cross by Rory Prendergast cut out keeper Andy Oakes and found Williams ideally placed six yards out with an open goal at his mercy.

But Williams, who also had a good penalty shout ruled out before the break, headed back across goal into the grateful arms of Oakes.

The Seasiders were forced to replace big striker John Murphy on 34 minutes, but dominated the first half and finally grabbed their reward three minutes after the break.

Skipper Peter Clarke found the influential Prendergast his first-time pass was straight into the path of Williams and the Welsh striker made no mistake from ten yards.

Eight minutes later Blackpool doubled the lead courtesy of a second goal in as many matches from midfielder Keith Southern.

Southern hit a 25 yard piledriver which Oakes was slow to react to and the shot beat the otherwise excellent keeper at the far post.

Walsall threw on former Manchester United youngster Mads Timm, but the Dane had little influence apart from one half chance which went just wide drawing ironic applause from the thousand or so travelling Walsall fans who had had little to cheer as their side struggled to prevent a first away defeat in five games.

Oakes kept the scoreline respectable with two fine saves in the last two minutes from Keigan Parker and Marcus Bean.
