Mark Wright was the Walsall hero with a goal five minutes from time which saw off battling Accrington 2-1 at the Fraser Eagle Stadium.

The League Two leaders knew they had been in a game after a hard fought victory. But it broke Stanley's heart, after Ian Craney had just equalised for them, ending the Reds' seven-game unbeaten run.

The game sprung to life on 39 minutes when Andy Proctor went down under a challenge by Chris Taylor in the area after Paul Mullin had also been felled by Ian Roper. But referee Steve Tanner rejected all appeals much to Stanley's frustration.

And Walsall went straight down the other end and opened the scoring. Wright's cross from the right was headed against the crossbar by James Constable and Hector Sam forced home the rebound.

Stanley threatened to equalise immediately with Craney's shot smothered by Clayton Ince and Mullin headed inches wide on the stroke of half time.

Walsall switched their defence around after the break but it was Stanley forcing the early pressure. Proctor and Andy Todd both tried their luck while Sean Doherty had a shot on 56 minutes deflected onto the post by Roper.

Wright had a great chance to wrap it up for Walsall on 57 minutes but Ian Dunbavin pulled off a stunning save to deny him.

Stanley's Phil Edwards was then livid when another penalty appeal was rejected on 75 minutes. Mullin's initial shot was saved by Ince and Edwards felt his follow up hit the hand of Dean Keates but again their appeals were ignored.

However, two minutes, later Stanley won a free kick 20 yards out and Craney fired his effort into the top corner of the net.

The celebrations were short-lived as, on 85 minutes, sub Ishmen Demontagnac raced down the left and put in a cross which Wright hit goalwards which Dunbavin could only fingertip into the net.
