Zidanes Swansea preview

Last updated : 26 August 2005 By Andy Van Hagen
Walsall go into a double header this weekend with first up Swansea making the visit to Bescot. Swansea have had a decent start to life in league 1 after their promotion last season. 6 points from 4 games leaves them lying 10th at start of play.

Yeovil have turned down a £100k offer from Swansea for midfielder Lee Johnson

Any ex-Saddlers in the squad?

The game sees the return of Roberto Martinez who now captains Swansea. He made 1 start and 5 apperances from the bench in his Walsall career and recieved one red card before moving to Swansea on a free in the 2002-3 season. Previously before us he has turned out for Motherwell and Wigan. It is Wigan where he is probably best known for with his six year stint.

Danger men for the visitors

Well if i say show booooooooat! His name is instantly associated with the feature from Soccer AM due to his constant appearence on the item. Lee Trundle needs no introduction. He was signed for £60k from Wrexham in the summer of 2003 and has scored 43 goals in 2 seasons with the Welsh side. A great goal scoring record in the lower leagues, he shows amazing ability. Lee enjoys the superstar status he recieves in Swansea and i think this is the main reason for his loyalty to the club, his career took off there and hes happy to remain for the time being.

Another player that needs no introduction is Adebayo Akinfenwa who scored on his last outing at Bescot last April. That time in the yellow of Torquay of course, he was out of contract at the end of last season and signed for Swansea. As he was under the age of 23 a tribunal ordered Swansea to pay the bargain price of £35k which could later rise to £110k, still a snip!! The striker scored 14 last season and has one to his name this season.

One-Nil to the sheepshaggers - hopefully wont be hearing that one tomorrow!

Prediction

I see this being a harder fixture than some people might give it credit for. Swansea have a potent strike force and some good players. Ex West Ham defender Izzy Ireikpen is a defender who has dropped down to league one football for regular first team action. I always think he is a danger from free kicks and corners, However i think we may have too much for them and will win 2-1. I think Matty Fryatt will start and he will be out to impress visiting scouts before next weeks deadline. This could be our last chance to see him in Walsall colours and hopefully he will bag a brace.
