Youth team can restore some pride

Last updated : 24 April 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
Tomorrow night the Youth team have a chance to take centre stage and stake their claim for squad status next season and for the remainder of this season.

Grimsby Town will visit Bescot to contest the Midland Youth Cup Final.

In contrast to our first team, this season our youths have produced brilliant displays to reach the final. In the first round they knocked last seasons winner's Shrewsbury Town out of the competition. We didn't just beat them, we beat them with true style coming through 5-0 winners!!

Along the way we also saw off Port Vale (AET) and Hednesford Town. The latter game saw Alex Nicholls suffering a broken leg, something that would have an effect on our unsuccessful League One survival bid.

So who are our team who have done us proud in reaching the final stage?

Keepers

Luke Tilt, James McKeown

Defenders

Peter Doran, Richard taundry, Emmanuel Smith, Leigh Clayton, Nethan Sansara

Midfielders

Jay Sztybel, Mark Bradley, Charlton Davies, Ishmel Demontagnac, Leon Quarless, Richard Davies

Attackers

David McDermott, Harry Harris, Chris Hanna

A number of the squad have already sampled first team experience. So we know about them already. Ones to watch who haven't featured for the first team are Richard Taundry in defence, Carlton Davies and Leon Quarless in Midfield. These are youngsters who are now breaking through to the reserve team.

It would be really great if we could reward these lads with a decent crowd at Bescot Stadium. It is a Cup Final that has to be decided on the night and for £2 adults and £1 concessions Thats a bargain for a Tuesday night worth of entertainment.

The way i look at it Walsall fans have not had much to cheer this season and have not much to shout about on the field full stop. These lads are our future and indications are looking like the futures bright with these players coming through. A lot of their current deals are coming up for renewal at the end of the season so the youngsters are playing for their pro deals. Next year these lads could be squad players so lets have a look at them in the Youth Cup Final.

Grimsby Town will be bringing a coulple of coach loads down to support their boys so lets totally out number them, out sing them and give our lads the stage for success.

Lets turn up to Bescot and forget this season for one night and give the youths the support they deserve and hopefully cheer them on to winning the Midland Youth Cup.
