Young Player of the Season awarded to defender

Mannie Smith won the Walsall FC 2008/09 Young Player of the Year at the Awards night at the Banks's Stadium on Sunday night.

Mannie just beat off competition from Troy Deeney who finished second in this vote and third in the main Player of the Year vote.

Mannie has made the centre-back position his own after coming into the side in January. His season started in slow fashion and was restricted to coming off the bench. It's always difficult for a young centre back getting up-to-speed with the pace of the match when coming on as a substitute; but once starting, Mannie showed the promise he did in our League Two title winning season and showed he is the future of our back line.
