Walsall look to bring in a trialist

Walsall have invited Chasetown defender Chris Slater for a two week trial.  The 21 year old centre back impressed against Oldham in the two recent FA Cup meetings.  Slater has been attracting interest from other league clubs  but it is believed the player would like to stay in the Midlands if he moved on.

Although Walsall have a full contingent of Centre Backs at the moment it will be worth looking at the promising youngster.  Steve Staunton has only started 4 out of a possible 21 games since his arrival.  If Walsall did decide to sign the defender he would be seen as a long term prospect rather than an immediate impact player.  Walsall signed James Constable from Chippenham Town last month.  It could be suggested that the scouting network is looking to unearth potential stars rising from non-league sides rather than look for players that have failed to meet standards at a higher grade club.
