The play switched from end to end in the opening minutes as both teams looked early breakthrough and after ten minutes young goalkeeper Tim Cooney was called into the action whilst Richard Davies tested Macclesfield's keeper Jonny Brain. Soon after, Cooney block well and the following up forward shot wide.

Walsall were looking dangerous going forward and were rewarded on 20 minutes when following good work from Sansara, Sam Parkin was in the right place to shoot home from close range.Nine minutes later Parkin found the net again thanks to some excellent work from Alex Nicholls and this time Parkin scored with an angled shot from around 12 yards.

It was mainly Walsall thereafter in the first half and Alex Nicholls, who was really up for this game throughout, was unlucky towards the end of the half. HT score 2-0

No substitutions as the second half got underway and Steve Jones cut in well from the touchline, beat his man and let fly with a beauty that hit the face of the crossbar. A superb cross by the impressive Sam Adkins saw Nicholls fly in the air with a diving header with just the keeper to beat but it flashed wide.

Just when it seemed it wasn't gong to be his night he found the net alright with a controlled 35 yard curling shot. The striker was alert to a difficult balll for the keeper to attend to who had raced out his box to head. He made a right hash of it and Nicho with his back to goal controlled the ball, turned and unleashed the shot which had the crowd of about 200 on their feet. It was a real fine goal and before the visitors had time to reflect they found themselves four goals down! Parkin had a shot palmed away but Josh O'Keefe followed up with a low shot and it really was game over now.

Macclesfield to their credit kept going  but their simply was no way back.  With 15 mins to go the hard working Parkin came off to be replaced by Grigg and soon afterwards O' Court came on for Sam Adkins. Both departing players had a good reception. The visitors should have had a couple of bookings late on but the ref let them off with warnings and so the Saddlers ran out comfortable winners.
