Walsall 2 Scunthorpe 2 report

Last updated : 12 February 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
Walsall remain just one point above the relegation zone after failing to take advantage of an ordinary looking Scunthorpe side.

The Saddlers twice found themselves behind and adding to their worries Paul Devlin saw red for using an elbow on Steve Foster.

Devlin will now miss three matches as Walsall shape up for a very difficult run in towards the end of the season.

Andrew Barrowman, who notched Walsall's late equaliser, was the only man to really trouble visiting keeper Tom Evans.
In the 14th minute the young striker saw a shot tipped over the bar by Evans following a pass by Mads Timm.

Scunthorpe took the lead in rocky fashion in the 19th minute. Timm appeared to be comfortably controlling the ball in midfield when he collapsed in agony with a back injury and Andy Keogh was quick to seize possession, beating keeper Andy Oakes with a great 25-yard shot. Walsall lost concentration as Timm fell to the ground.

Kevin James was brought on as a replacement for Mads Timm who was unable to continue with a re-occurance of a previous injury.

Scunthorpe looked to be in control but then Dean Keates made an impact in the 30th minute. Scunthorpe failed to deal with a high ball and Keates took possession before firing a great shot through several defenders and over the Scunthorpe keeper. The shot was a true thunder bolt that gave the keeper little chance.

Keates fired wide with a free-kick two minutes before the interval but Scunthorpe restored the lead just before half time.

The goal came as a result of a well rehearsed free-kick with Michael Rose shaping up to take it before pulling out at the last second when another player went to take the strike at the same time. Both players looked confused while Jim Goodwin pushed the ball short for Neil MacKenzie to score with a shot from just outside the box. Not for the first time this season a sneaky set piece payed off for the irons.

Walsall looked the better side in the second half, and Barrowman had a shot saved by the alert Evans.

Devlin saw red for the use of a elbow. No-one who saw the incedent would complain. Foster left the field with blood pouring from his cheek. No complaints there. Its just a shame that an experienced player such as Devlin decided to conduct himself in that way.

It looked like it wasn't to be Walsall's day. Ishmel Demontagnac was brought on for Simon Osborn and Grant Smith took a central midfield role. The Saddlers now looked more dangerous and better balanced, despite only having 10 men.

Oakes somehow kept out a fierce cross-shot from Cleveland Taylor to keep Walsall in the game after 74 minutes and three minutes later Walsall snatched an equaliser.

It was another high ball which Scunthorpe were unable to clear, Pablo Mills pumped a long pass up for Barrowman who sent a 15-yard shot sweetly over Evans. The keeper was lobbed and the crowd went crazy!

In the 83rd minute Oakes made an unbelievable double save, firstly from MacKenzie's shot and then from a follow up header by Matt Sparrow which looked certain to go in.

Nicholls came on for Kevin James in the 86th minute, James stormed straight down the tunnel. No-body likes to see that. James showed many moments of discontent and arrogance as things did not go the way he wanted on the pitch. The player showed moments of skill but who wants to see a moaning presence on the pitch when we are facing a relegation battle?

At the other end Keates almost crowned a tremendous 2nd time round home debut with a shot that hit the Scunthorpe bar and bounced to safety.
