Last updated : 04 May 2009 By Andy Van Hagen
Proud Fans Of The Year Nicky King and Claire Hendy agreed to give Sadlad an exclusive WalsallMAD interview immediately after they returned from picking up their award at a packed Banks's Stadium. The loyal fans were shortlisted with three others. They talked about their success and also gave an insight into their terrific support for the club they clearly love over the years.....

Q-What was your reaction on hearing that you had won this award?

Nicky- "I couldn't believe it at first! .We were up against three great competitors but to actually be voted winners was a fantastic feeling."

Claire- "I couldn't believe it either! We were up against some people who have supported the club for years but it was so nice to win it .We feel very proud!"

Q-Before this, what was your 'claim to fame' in supporting Walsall F.C.?

Nicky- "Various moments like Merthyr Tydfil away. It was a live SKY TV game and the camera was focused on us for a good minute! Giving a speech before the open bus arrived and dressing up- there was the nuns outfits,Last year at Huddersfield Claire and I dressed up as bride and groom and we were dressed up as Mickey and Minnie at MK Dons this year so there have been a few!"

Claire- "I was the mascot for Wracky's testimonial against the Wolves at the Banks's Stadium. I worshipped him!"

Q- When did you first start supporting the Super Saddlers?

Nicky- "About 16 years ago.In my younger days it used to be a selected few with my parents especially at holiday resorts to make a weekend of it .As the seasons went by it got more and now look at us-we can't keep away!"

Claire-"Around seven or eight years properly for me but I did go to a few home games before that and remember very well the promotion clinching game v. Oldham ten years ago."

Q-What do you like best about travelling to away games by coach?

Nicky- "The atmosphere is there. Roy,who runs the coach, is a terrific guy. You couldn't wish to meet a nicer person."

Claire-"Its nice to meet new people and talk to them about their experiences from following Walsall."

Q- How many Walsall shirts do you own?

Nicky- "Troy Deeney asked me the same question last year! I haven't counted them but its a whole wardrobe full! I actually own 2 or 3 of the same shirt on quite a few of them! I work with a load of WBA fans and I like to show my pride by wearing a different old shirt each day!"

Claire- "Around 15 or so for me I guess."

Q-You were terrific at MK Dons in your fancy dress. Are you planning anything for next season?

Nicky- "Every season we like to beat the previous. We thought last year was hard to beat but when we got the Mickey and Minnie outfits we knew we had topped it. Next season will take a lot of hard thinking but I'm sure we can come up with something!"

Claire- "Yeah we will definately dress up again on the last away game of next season. Not sure what yet as our Mickey and Minnie outfits are going to take some beating!"

Q-Roughly how many different grounds have you seen Walsall play on in total?

Nicky- "At a rough guess around the 100 mark-league and non-league."

Claire- "Around 60 for me I'd guess."

Q-What Walsall players have meant the most to you and why?

Nicky- "Jimmy Walker.Loved him since day one. He is a legend, a true Saddler who shows passion to our club. Matty Fryatt- he is my man too! Great on and off the pitch. Martin Butler-another one who loved the club until Bonser did the dirty on him. Ant Gerrard-a class player. a bit quick tempered at times but footy is a frustrating game!"

Claire- "I liked Deano from my first match but quickly started to love Darren Wrack and had him on my shirt for some years. He was always so nice to me everytime I spoke to him and always made time for me. Then he repaid me for my support by letting me be his mascot for his testimonial game. He was and always will be a legend for me however from this season I have really liked Paul Boertien as he's a great player and again so friendly too."

Q-Five years of 100% attendance for every game home and away is a brilliant record but have you ever come close to missing a game over this period?

Nicky- "Merthyr Tidfil was a near miss! I had to really grovel to my boss at work to let me work though my dinner and knock off work early. Then there was Gillingham away- I had a letter come through to go on X Factor on that matchday. We were already relegated so my family was telling me to go for it but I couldn't miss that one after going all season!"

Claire- "We were close to missing Peterborough away one New Year's Day as Nicky and I had gone there the day before to celebrate New Year's Eve there and I had a bad asthma attack and ended up in hospital! I did manage to get out just before the game although I felt awful. Apart from that the thought of missing a game has never really come into my head!"

Q-Do you have any plans to continue your fantastic support?

Nicky- "Of course! As long as I can keep on going I WILL be there! I love the Mighty Saddlers with all my heart."

Claire- "Yes definately. For the next few years at least! .From that I mean I shall be there for EVERY game! I just can't imagine never missing one. Hopefully I can do the next 30 years!"

Thanks a lot girls for your time so soon after your big night. I'm sure all at WalsallMAD appreciate your time and frankness so soon after your big moment so tell me what was going through your minds when it was formally announced on the night and you went up to collect your award?

Nicky- "It was nerve wracking but getting up that stage in front of all those people was a proud moment."

Claire- "How did I feel? Terrified- I was shaking!"

Cheers girls, enjoy the summer and we will see you around next season- everywhere as per usual!
