Stockport storm to seventh straight win and clean sheet

Last updated : 17 February 2007 By Andy Van Hagen
Stockport County
eased to their seventh win and clean sheet on the bounce against relegation haunted Accrington Stanley at the Fraser Eagle Stadium.

New on-loan Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey has had a dream start to senior football. Seven games and zero goals conceeded!!! We can only hope that Walsall stick the first goal past the dingle on Tuesday evening.

Lively left-winger Adam Griffin slotted home the winner on the stroke of half-time and then left it to his defenders to do the rest.

County's 1,400-strong travelling faithful can maybe now start to dream of automatic promotion never mind the play-offs that looked more realistic before this one-goal victory.

Despite only finding the net once on this calm afternoon in East Lancashire, the Hatters could have quite easily added to their tally with strike pair Anthony Pilkington and Anthony Elding squandering four gilt-edged chances.

But in the end a Stanley side completely shocked of confidence never threatened the commanding County defence led by the impressive Ashley Williams.

The winner actually came from a Stanley attack with a long throw into the box finding its way back to midfielder Dominic Blizzard. And the man on loan from Premiership strugglers Watford, sprinted clear before delivering an inch-perfect ball into the path of Griffin, who did the rest to beat the advancing Stanley keeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak.

County had already had two chances cleared off the line by Robbie Williams, in the first minute of the game, and Alan Rogers.

You got the feeling that they could be made to pay for their failure to convert if Accrington pulled their socks up in the second period.

But unfortunately for the hosts they couldn't and the points headed back to Greater Manchester.

Jim Gannon will still be wary of going too far overboard on his teams chances of glory in May, but make no mistake about it, County are firmly in the mix for a place in League One.

As for Stanley, they have been plunged further into trouble at the bottom and, on this showing they will struggle to avoid a premature return to the Nationwide Conference unless something changes fast.
