Steve Thompson on 2-1 defeat

After a weekend to consider his thoughts, Notts County manager Steve Thompson told his club's website www.nottscountyfc.co.uk his views on the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Walsall.

"I never shun from the truth, and when you give away two bad goals like that it is difficult. I am obviously disappointed with the result, but I am happy with the way we played and the attitude of the players. The truth is I was more annoyed after the Boston game where we threw it away than I was after the game this time.

We out-footballed the team top of the league in my opinion, and they must be top for a reason. Credit to the boys in the second half because they came out and had a right go at them, but again their goalkeeper had a few saves to make. In all I felt we had enough chances to win it, or at least to get a point. From my point of view and the fans' point of view, the lads rolled their sleeves up and never gave in.

In the last five minutes, they were really hanging on. I think we needed a goal in the first fifteen of the second half, but the lads just kept going and going. I think we showed out there we are not just a lump it and hope team. We played some good football and I think out-footballed the side top of the table who have only lost a game all season in the League.

We gave them both the goals, especially the second which was a disgraceful goal, after their goalkeeper had kept them in the game in the first half with some great saves. Michael Edwards' shot was well saved, Parky deflected one wide, Junior had a great chance and we have to put those chances away. It was frustrating to go behind because they hadn't even had a shot at that stage. I had said as much to John Gannon and then we got caught out.

No-one picked up Kinsella and I'll have to look at it on the video to tell you who, and then the boy Wright had oceans of space to bang it in the net. I don't think he should even have been on the pitch at that time because of the challenges on Pilks.I'm not going to nit-pick because eleven against eleven, we were the better side. It was a shocking goal to concede though, and the second goal was really poor just before the break.

We have to get back to being mean and stop conceding goals like we have been. That has been the story of things so far. No-one has worked a miracle goal against us all season and we have to get back to defending better. We've got ten days to sort things out now. You have to take your chances when they come your way, and also keep things out at the back and we will be working hard on things now."
