STAUNTON SET FOR IRELAND POST?

Last updated : 01 November 2005 By Andy Van Hagen
Walsall player coach Steve Staunton is about to be named the new manager of Republic of Ireland next week, the Daily Mirror have reported today. Staunton only joined Walsall back in August but we already had an embarrasment of riches in the centre back position with Westwood, Roper, Gerrard, Bennett and the emerging Dann. He was brought in to add experience to the back line and aid their development through his defensive coaching. However our defensive record has got worse during his spell at the club. Many fans believe his wages would be better spent on a right winger or a new striker who are desperately needed because of injuries.

After his last outing against Swansea it would be hard to see Staunton play much if any part in our up coming fixtures. Although he showed a desire to prolong his playing career, this will be the incentive to hang up his boots and start his coaching/managerial career.

If this appointment is confirmed it may come as a suprise to Walsall fans, but outside of Walsall it wouldnt cause a stir. Staunton is a legend in Ireland for being such a mainstay in their team during the 'glory' years or the nineties and early noughties! He is their record cap holder and still has friends on the FAI board.

The path to the job has been made easier through big names such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Martin O'Niel, David O'Leary and Phillippe Troussier all declining approaches. This leaves Staunton an easy option as he is a well loved name with a great reputation within the country.

A important indicater in national jobs is movements in the bookies and have seen him backed down from 33-1 to 10-1. A significant fall and vote in confidence.
