Last night Sky Sports News were reporting Walsall had agreed a £60,000 compensation package for Steve Staunton with the FAI. Walsall moved in quickly to deny this saying this was "widely inaccurate".
The BBC are today reporting that the figure is more like £20,000. This would seem a more accurate account as Im sure the FAI would have senced that Walsall were probably quite relieved to be getting Staunton off the wage bill. The money saved in wages will add up to a large amount over the course of the season, that is now able to be re-invested in the team. So the deal is worth more than £20,000 to Walsall FC in reality.
Staunton had a unhappy spell at the Saddlers suffering from injuries. His season for us consisted of only 7 starts and 3 substitute appearences.
Staunton is set to be named new Ireland manger on Monday.
