Smith interesting Swindon Town

Paul Smith who terminated his contract with Walsall on the basis of having a gentlemans agreement of a January contract offer from Gillingham is attracting interest from Iffy Onoura at Swindon Town.

Onoura is bound to have contacted Merson to talk about Smiths Bescot stay. The guess would be that Merson would have still given him a positive report destpite his performances in a Walsall shirt and his backing down from his agreement to move to the Midlands area.

Merson really believed that Smith would become a big signing for us, but once Smith refused to move from his Essex home it created problems. His fitness suffered and injuries came from the long commute. Smith has now realised that he may have to spend 5 months away from his family as he battles to save his league career.

Smith has also attracted enquiries from local Essex and Kent non-league clubs. If he has not got fixed up with a league club before the January window closes then he will talk about a short term deal with one of them. The opportunity of a player/coach role has also been offered by a local club.
