Santalad's away day report - Tranmere

Unbelieveable! I find it hard to believe I've just witnessed Walsall lose AGAIN in time added on. When the fourth official put up the board 3 mins it was in the back of my mind what could happen but when it did it was so cruel. We started a bit better in the the first half than recent away games and Taundry and Reich both had shots saved.

Clayton Ince wasn't called into too much action in the first period, smart saves in the 13th and 14 th minute kept the home side at bay and their first goal was something of a tame affair. A short corner resulted in a shot evading several Walsall defenders and centre back Goodison couldn't believe his good fortune as all he had to do was to stab the ball in the empty net.

The timing of this goal was a bit deflating-42 mins when we were looking to go in at the break all square.Their threat seemed to be in the main from ex-Saddler Chris Shuker. The little midfielder causing problems with his
pace and ability on the ball. Another ex-Saddler Eddy Sonko got involved in some useful moves too without causing any real concern.

Marco Reich seemed to be given a more forward role in
the second half linking up with Jabo, who put his usual effort in without ever looking like scoring. We won an obvious penalty as Jabo was hauled down by their
centre back and Marco stepped up to riffle a perfectly struck spot kick and it milked it to the Saddlers fans at that end.

Just after that goal 30 or 40 fans at the back started to abuse Jimmy Mullen. Even the home fans wondered what that was all about. Surely after your team have clawed themselves back into a game the idea is to offer support to the players but this wasn't really the option.

As the game wore on more anti-Mullen cries and on this occasion what did they want him to do? The subs bench contained Davies, Smith, Adkins and Grigg. With the game at that point all square did they really want to throw a
couple of inexperienced kids on?

Eddy Sonko went off to a good hand from the Walsall fans- pity they didn't get behind their own players on the day a bit more.

Weston and Gerrard defended stoutly, Taundry put himself
about I thought, Nicholls and Deeney huffed and puffed but never looked like scoring.I just hope next month we can beg steal or probably borrow some players. Will Mullen survive? Would Bonser make a sacking mid-season? There are more questions than answers.

My afternoon got off to a decent start. There was time to
sample the delights of both local pubs. The Mersey Clipper is virtually on the car park. Packed with Walsall fans but seemed more meal-orientated than the Prenton Park which although house more home fans had the cheaper ale.

The beer may have been the best part of the afternoon- there again watching Walsall FC at the moment is enough to drive you to drink!
