Saddlers to sell stars to clear debt?

Last updated : 08 November 2005 By Andy Van Hagen
At the AGM today Walsall fans were warned that the teams stars may be sold to clear the clubs debts that were accumulated during the period after ITV collapsed. Over the last coulple of seasons Walsall tried to manage their way out of the debt through other avenues but without success. This leaves us with the only viable option of selling off promising rising stars and replacing them internally or through free signing on similar wages to the departee.

Obviously the main assets to the club are Matty Fryatt, Ishmael Demontagnac and Julian Bennet. Matty and Jules have been regularly linked with clubs in the last two years and hearing this news, rival clubs might be prepared to lodge bids in the January transfer window. Fryatt was a wanted man over the summer and has scored 8 goals this season. Although 5 of these have been penalties, he has won many of them and a good performance on TV last week did him no harm.

Walsall are a club who under Jeff Bonsers stewardship have strived to keep away from debt and until ITV digitals collapse recorded a decade of profits. Two years of reporting negative figures and a relegation to League one means action has to be taken now to avoid administration threats.

**This story was compiled from various news sources, however at the fans meeting last night (after this article was written), Roy Whalley did not seem impressed with the stories written in these sources.  This casts doubts over the substance of the news as it did not come from a direct club statement or spokesperson.
