Walsall today clinched deals for goalkeeper Richard McKinney and coach Iffy Onoura.

McKinney, 25, was released by Colchester United at the end of last season. He made 30 appearances for United in his two years at Layer Road, seven of which were last season. The 6”2 Northern Irish stopper had been linked with a move to Southend. He began his career as a trainee at Manchester City before moving to Swindon Town for a year. He will compete with Mark Paston, signed from Bradford, for the goalkeeper’s jersey at Bescot.

Onoura, 36, finished his 455 game playing career with Huddersfield at the end of last season. The former Tranmere and Gillingham striker will be Paul Merson’s first team coach. “He's young and enthusiastic and that's what I wanted," said Merson. "He can help the young lads like Gary Birch and Matty Fryatt develop and he fits into that 'hungry' category that I described. I'm pleased with how my backroom has been assembled."
