Rochdale after Walsall trialist

Last updated : 13 July 2006 By Andy Van Hagen

Walsall trialist Nathan Stanton arrived at Bescot after a three day trial period with our League Two opening day opponents Rochdale. The defender played for Rochdale in Monday's behind the scenes friendly with Sheffield Wednesday. A game that Rochdale lost 1-0.

Parkin tried to sign 25 year old Stanton last season and feels his pace at the back could be a useful asset. Speaking to the Rochdale Observer the manager was quoted:

“Nathan is a natural defender who can play right-back, but his best position is central defence,” said Parkin.

“He may not be the tallest, but then again neither is Cannavaro, and he didn't do too badly, did he?

Parkin went on to say he would like the rest of the week to work with Stanton before deciding whether to offer him a contract or not. However the defender decided to turn out for us. Another club known to be in the running for his signiture is hometown club, Notts County.
