Report - Swansea 1 Walsall 1

Last updated : 12 March 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
Swansea failed to get back into League One's automatic promotion race after they were held by struggling Walsall at the Liberty Stadium.

And they needed a late deflected strike from sub Adebayo Akinfenwa to snatch a draw against Kevan Broadhurst's side.

Paul Devlin's 17th minute opener looked to have left Kenny Jackett's automatic promotion hopes all but over.

But Akinfenwa's 88th minute strike at least ensured they picked up a point against the Saddlers, and the hosts could have won it in a late surge.

But it was too little to late after the Welshman missed a hatful of chances early on.

Lee Trundle enjoyed the game's first chance inside five minutes, his powerful shot stinging the hands of Andy Oakes as the hosts dominated the early stages.

But the Swans' good work was almost undone on 13 minutes when Mark Wright's deep cross found Kevin James unmarked in the box and his header was only denied by the feet of Swansea goalkeeper Willy Gueret.

But Walsall's opener would come just four minutes later, skipper Simon Osborn picking out Devlin from a free-kick and the striker rifled the ball home from inside the box.

Andy Robinson headed over just seconds later as Swansea looked to bounce back and he would go closer still on 22 minutes when he somehow managed to hit the post after being put clear on goal by Trundle.

Robinson again found himself through on goal on 34 minutes but his cross come shot was just inches too far for the stretching Rory Fallon.

Swansea were almost made to pay for their missed opportunities with just a minute to go before the break when Andrew Barrowman beat the offside trap and rounded Gueret, only to see his effort cleared off the goal-line by the recovering Garry Monk.

The introduction of Leon Knight sparked the Swans into life, but still they couldn't find a way past the Walsall back-line, Robinson again coming closest when his 62nd minute effort was headed off the line by Grant Smith.

And Barrowman should have made the game safe for the visitors when he was put in on goal on 70 minutes, only to shoot straight at Gueret.

He was made to pay when Akinfenwa's long-range effort was deflected past Oakes with just two minutes remaining.
