Released Saddler on trial at Chesterfield

Last updated : 05 October 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
Michael Standing has arrived at Chesterfield on trial. He is due to spend a month at Salergate in a bid to securing a longer term deal.

Since leaving Bescot, Standing has had a number of trials at various clubs, including one at Friday's opponents Chester City, but to no avail.

While at Walsall Standing struggled with both injury and the inability to fit into our 4-4-2 formation. While not a midfielder he wasn't a forward either. He was tried on the wing but faced competition from others within the squad. All these contributed to the player only making 44 starts in a two year spell.

Standing was the main attraction in the move that saw him and Gareth Barry make their way to Villa Park. While Barry flourished, Standing never made a first team appearance for our Premiership neighbours and was allowed to join Bradford on a free.

Chesterfield boss Roy McFarland told his official clubs website -

"We are short of midfield cover and it's an area we would like to strengthen. Michael's a free agent following his release last summer and we want to take an extended look at him."
