Paul Smith - Club less!
Last updated : 06 June 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
Swindon Town have told Paul Smith that they will not be offering him a new contract when his current deal expires at the end of June.
Dennis Wise has informed the player that he does not feature in his plans. This is not a surprise as the management team of Wise and Gus Poyet are both registered to play in midfield next season. Subsequently the ex-Millwall manager is known to be looking for younger legs.
It has been a season to forget for Paul Smith. Three clubs, three rejections and a reputation ruined.
Having gone back on his agreement to move to the Midlands area after his summer move to Walsall, Smith decided he didn't want to move his family from their Kent/Essex home. The player was then loaned back to Gillingham while Walsall continued paying his wages. It was agreed that Gillingham would then take over his contract on 01/01/06. Gillingham backed out of this deal and Smith was left in limbo because he signed a contract termination with Walsall for that date.
Smith managed to get himself a deal with Swindon Town two weeks after the Gillingham rejection. His first few performances were promising for his new club but then injuries kicked in, these restricted his appearences and have also led to his release.
Will he find another club? Its hard to say. One thing is for sure however, he needs to think hard about the location of the club he is joining, because he wont get many more chances at 34 years old. He was lucky this season that Walsall were willing to let the player re-join his ex-club. Many other clubs wouldn't have. The player is suffering in the long run because he would have been contracted with us for next season. Lucky escape in my book!
