There has been a surprise announcement by Gillingham, claiming to have signed Chris Palmer from Walsall.

Their official website states he has signed a two year deal, having joined on a free transfer following his contract expiry at the Banks's Stadium.

What is surprising is that on Monday 8th June Walsall's official website announced Chris Palmer had agreed a new deal with the Saddlers (but no mention of length of contract 'agreed'):

There is no mention of this transfer on Walsall's website as fans await official comment.

It could be a verbal agreement was made on the deadline day set by Chris Hutchings however the player might not have actually signed on the dotted line? This would be highly embarrassing for the club if so and unexcusable administration, but regardless of the circumstances the club will be left with faces as red as our new 2009/10 home shirt.

Palmer played 48 times last season and featured at right back, left back, right wing and left wing, proving to be a popular choice with both managers, if not the fans who were largely divided.
