Oakes to miss Scunthorpe trip

Andy Oakes will be out of Saturdays trip to Scunthorpe , with the wrist injury he sustained in the pre match warm up against Chesterfield. Its not known how long he will be out for but with the Brentford home game coming only 3 days after Scunthorpe, it is almost certain he will miss this too.

Merson is expected to dip into the loan market to find a keeper to fill the gap left by Oakes's absence. Rene Gilmartin is a young goalkeeper and Merson would have to be very brave to rely on him at this tough time in his managerial career. Rene does not look ready for a run of first team football.

Good quality loans keepers are about, Russell Hoult has just joined Notts Forest on loan. Paul Gerrard has subsequently been pushed down to their number three and could do a job. Whether Forest would be willing to let him join a rival team is another matter, however they may want him off the wage bill while Hoult is in the squad.

Another option would be to recall our loan keeper Dean Coleman from Halesowen Town, however he is viewed similar to Gilmartin and would also represent a big gamble on Mersons part. The season on loan at Halesowen would do him good, so we are unlikely to halt his learning experience.
