No room for Standing at Bescot

Last updated : 04 July 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
It has been revealed that midfielder Michael Standing has been released from Bescot by mutual consent.

Standing was Paul Merson's first signing. Arriving the summer we were relegated to League One he was billed as an exciting creating midfielder.

Despite 61 appearances (17 as substitute), Standing never really established himself in the first team. Often being the frustrating player to watch who never performes to his full potential.

Standing was far from happy not being assured first team football and has struggled with injuries throughout his time at Walsall. A fresh start to re-invent himself could just be what's needed to get the best out of him.

Standing left Brighton to join Aston Villa in a deal that saw him and Gareth Barry moving to the Midlands.  Standing was labelled as the 'good one' out of the pair however it was Barry who excelled while Standing left after failing to make a first team appearance in four years.  From there he joined Bradford.  He was allowed to join Walsall after the financial troubles at Valley Parade.

Could this departure be clearing the decks for a midfield arrival this week?
