Sky Sports News have announced that Paul Merson has signed for Tamworth and he could be making his debut this Saturday in the home fixture against Halifax Town.

Merson last week spoke of how he recieved lots of playing offers, including some from the Championship, however he has decided to turn them down in favour of joining Tamworth. It was also rumoured that Merson would be making a playing return to the Bescot Stadium but this awkward situation has now been avoided.

Merson develped a good friendship with Tamworth player manager Mark Cooper as Cooper tried to loan players off Walsall during Mersons reign at Bescot, this was sure to be one of the major factors in his decision to join the lambs. At this stage of his Career he just wants first team football and stepping down two levels should ensure this is achieved. With no disrepect to the Conference Mersons footballing brain at this standard is worth a couple yards pace.

Tamworth are currently 20th in the Nationwide Conference one point behind Scarbrough but they have two games in hand because of their heroic FA Cup run.

Merson has signed a three-month deal. He will look to assess his options in the summer
