Mathias on defeating of Walsall

After watching Macclesfield become the first League Two team to win at Walsall, and their first this season, assistant manager Ray Mathias spoke to his club's official website www.mtfc.co.uk.

We're delighted. It's finally come and it's a credit to the players who've been working so hard since we got here. It's the third clean sheet in four games and with Saturday aside we'll keep building on it - it was a setback at the weekend in the first half but we battled back well on Saturday. The players have shown great character, they did so to get back in the game second half on Saturday and of course again last night to get them the win.

We have great faith in the players that are at the club at the moment and it wasn't a worry to select a different defensive line up. We changed the whole system, in fact, and we've worked on it leading up the game and in the end we've come out well pleased with the performance.

Last night was what we all needed and what we all wanted. No matter what stage of the season you're at the first win is definitely a valuable one and it's especially important after so many games that the club's gone without one., even since Paul and myself have arrived. But in that time the performances on the field have been superb on the whole, and now we need to continue the run - draws aren't any good to us, and we have to be positive and keep the performances going and get those results.
