Walsall manager Chris Hutchings is hopeful of making at least one signing before Saturday's trip to Brentford.Hutchings has a portion of the £500,000 fee received from Watford for Troy Deeney last week to boost his squad after opening with two home defeats.

He told BBC WM: "Hopefully we can [make a signing this week]. That's what we're striving to do.

"If we have to miss out this Saturday and get them in for the following week, we'll have to go with what we have."

Hutchings added: "We've been working tirelessly over the last few weeks, trying to get people in, now obviously with the Troy saga all resolved we can hopefully go and get people in now.

We're working tirelessly but hopefully we can bring two or three players in by the time the window shuts

"We've had irons in the fire and we've contacted a lot of clubs about a lot of players. I've spoken to a lot of Premier League clubs, but sometimes they don't want them to come down as far as division one, they want them to go to the Championship to get experience.

"That's a little bit of a knock back at times, so we're working tirelessly but hopefully we can bring two or three players in by the time the window shuts."

In the Carling Cup defeat by Tranmere Hutchings gave teenage striker Will Grigg an opportunity to shine, coming on as a substitute for the final half hour.

"I was pleased with Will. He was away a lot last year on international duty for Ireland, so he's missed a lot of club football, and he was away a couple of weeks ago during pre-season," he said.

"There was an opportunity to get him on for half an hour and see how he did, and I was pleased with his contribution.

"The lad has got ability, but right at this moment we're looking for a little bit more experience and someone who's done it. We've got some good young kids, we just need a little more experience at the moment."
