O'Neil joined Walsall on loan from Portsmouth in September 2003 after Paul Merson identified him as the player to be 'his legs' in midfield. O'Neils arrival saw an up-turn in results and his performances won him a recall to Portsmouth where he was promoted to their Premiership first team squad. From there O'Neil hasn't looked back and quickly went on to become the club's captain.
