Walsall have announced they have appointed Chris Hutchings as their new first team manager with Martin O'Connor returning to the club as his number two. Both have signed deals until May '10 at the Banks's Stadium.

The new appointments both know the club well having been former players. Hutchings made 40 appearances for the club and Martin O'Connor crossed the white line 178 times in two spells.

Hutchings is well known as Paul Jewell's usual choice of assistant and has replaced him at the helm of both Bradford and Wigan. Earlier this month he took the reigns on a caretaker basis of Derby County before the arrival of Nigel Clough.

In his playing days Hutchings represented Harrow Borough, Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town, Walsall and Rotherham United. In total he made 468 senior league appearances.  At Rotherham he made the step up to youth team coach where he stayed until taken to Bradford as Assisitant Manager by Chris Kamara.

A few interesting facts about our new manager:

While Wigan Manager he topped the Premiership for a short period in August

While out of work in Jan 08, he joined Bury on a VOLUNTARY basis to assist caretaker manager Chris Brass

Hutchings played in the first game at the new Bescot Stadium
