Chasetowns FA Cup fairy tale comes to an end - Report

Last updated : 16 November 2005 By Andy Van Hagen
Chasetown came out fighting and created the first goalscoring chance in the 8th minute. Up to the 31st minute the game was even but the decisive first goal went to Oldham, one that left the keeper no chance. A 20 yard shot from Paul Warne gave Oldham the all important first goal to settle the nerves of playing non league opposition.

Chasetown did not allow their heads to drop as they continued to cause Oldham problems in the closing stages of the first half. Oldham had keeper Chris Day to thank for stopping a powerful goalward header from Chasetown centre back Thompson.

After half time Oldham piled on the pressure and were rewarded with their 2nd, Chris Porter slotting home from close range on 57 mins. On the 75 minute mark Chris Porter scored again, this time with a 30 yard drive which in fairness the Chasetown keeper could of dealt with better. This confirmed Oldhams place in the second round. Even the most hopeful would not beable to envisage a remakable comeback.

A fourth Oldham goal was scored in the 84th minute with Chris Hall scoring his first goal in senior football, a joyous moment for the player however the referee promptly booked Hall for over celebrating his goal. A little harsh in any ones book. Just like the result, 4-0 slightly flattered Oldham as the non leaguers who are 7 divisions and 133 places lower than the three times FA Cup semi finalists in the football league pyramid, gave their all and gave the travelling support great memories.

A crowd of just over 7000 were in attendance with roughly a 3rd travelling up with the visitors. A 4-0 loss it might have been but Chasetown will always remember the famous cup run of 2005. It has been a joy to watch, hopefully now they can continue their good form and achieve a promotion campaign to show for it.

Next up for Chasetown - Nantwich Town at home in th FA Vase!!
