Brentford 5!! Walsall 0 - Report

Last updated : 05 February 2006 By Andy Van Hagen
After their heroics in the FA Cup last Saturday, Brentford put aside their giant killing of Sunderland with a thumping of sad Walsall.

Goals from Isaiah Rankin and Ricky Newman before the break followed by Paul Brooker and Sam Sodje strikes and a Kevin O'Connor penalty kept the Bees' promotion hopes alive.

Such was the manner of the Brentford show the home fans were singing "Who needs Campbell?" in reference to DJ Campbell's transfer to Birmingham.

Walsall were uncomfortable all afternoon and their plight was thrown further into gloom for boss Paul Merson when a section of travelling fans unfurled a 'Merson out' banner after the first goal.

Brentford went ahead on seven minutes when Darren Pratley hustled through on the left and his cross found Rankin who squeezed in the opener.

The Bees doubled their advantage four minutes later from a Newman 20-yard effort set up after from some good work from Brooker and Lloyd Owusu on the left.

EASY!!!

After the break Walsall continued to play a passing game when a containment of the rampant Bees would have been a better option.

Brentford, however, were just too good.

Walsall had their first effort on goal from a Kevin James chance which he put wide, but the visitors were amazed to see the ball immediately fall to Sam Tillen whose exquisite ball found Brooker to slide home the third of the afternoon.

Sodje capped a memorable defensive performance with a fourth when he headed in a Brooker corner.

The Saddlers' misery was complete five minutes from time when Anthony Gerrard handled in the area and the resulting penalty was despatched by O'Connor.

Walsall were unable to keep the ball enough to trouble the Brentford defence and Merson will now hope things improve in order for him to keep his job.

The only time the Brentford keeper touched the ball was when he was taking goal kicks!! That says it all!! His kit was cleaner when he went in at full time than it was at the kick off!! Disgraceful!!

Brentford never got out of second gear and if ever the EASY EASY EASY chant was in the dictionary, today would be the description.
