Saddlers Fans Go AWOL

Last updated : 27 February 2005 By Mister Happy
A grand total of 4966 fans turned up on Saturday to watch Saddlers entertain Bradford. This is the first time since Sept 2002 that we have had a sub 5000 gate.

The last time this occurred was during the Bescot redevelopment and only 3 sides of the ground were in use. The visitors last time around? You guessed it - Bradford City.

During September 2002 we played 2 matches in 4 days both with a sub 5000 gate. Sat 14 Sept 4678 fans turned out to watch the 0-1 home defeat against Bradford and the following Tuesday 4648 witnessed the epic 3-4 reverse against Rotherham.

Initial thoughts would suggest that we need to inform our Yorkshire friends that the world isn't flat as they don't appear to travel well. However, this current sub 5000 gate is more down to the fact that this is the first time in 8 seasons that we have nothing to play for.

As football fans we have been well and truly spoiled following the Saddlers of late. Every season since 1997 we have had either a promotion or relegation fight to keep us entertained.

2003-2004

This was our third successive season in the Football League's top flight. We had massive pre season optimism with the signing of Merson. Unfortunately it all ended in tears as we were relegated to our current position.

2002-2003

By the skin of our teeth we managed to avoid relegation with a victory at Blundell Park

2001-2002

This year it looked like we would be relegated. Bonser sharpened his axe and terminated the employment of Sir Ray and replaced him with Colin Lee. A master stroke by the Owner as we just about managed the dreaded drop.

2000-2001

Yet another promotion, this time through the play offs. What a day, what a season. Never to be forgotten

1999-2000

Our first season in the real Division 1. For the first time in years we were playing the big boys. The season ended with relegation on the last day of the season away to Ipswich. En route to relegation though who will ever forget the fantastic double over the Baggies; victory of Blues; and sweetest of all that marvellous trouncing of Wolves in their own back yard. Rambo, Walker, Viveash - what memories.

1998-1999

Sir Ray Graydon in his first season in charge took us to automatic promotion ahead of big spending Manchester City. This was an unbelievable achievement considering he barely had a squad when he took over and we were relegation faveourites.

1997-1998

The one and only season under Fat Jan almost undone all the hard work of Chris Nicholl as we narrowly avoided relegation to the bottom tier. However, what a season it was with the unpredictable Roger Boli and Jeff Peron. Who could forget that awesome day out at Old Trafford?

As you can see, we have been well and truly entertained over the last 8 years. This is the first time that we have had nothing to really play for.

It takes some getting used to doesn't it!
