Merson Takes The Blame

Last updated : 24 February 2005 By Mister Happy
One thing is for certain. Paul Merson is refreshingly honest.

The one thing that makes me angry is listening to football managers making excuses for their own failings. Our previous gaffer Colin Lee was one of these irritants.

Paul Merson has an open and honest policy in much the same way as Chris Nicholl (although he is a little less blunt but more entertaining).

After the last minute defeat away to Luton Town, Merse more or less admitted that the play off dream was over. Not only that, he also admitted that it was his own fault that Saddlers were unlikely to figure in the end of season shake up.

At the start of his managerial career Merson thought it would be possible to win matches whilst playing fast entertaining football. Unfortunately we haven't the quality of players available in order to do this.

Saddlers started the season brightly with Mersons methods although the defensive frailties were there for all to see. As teams worked us out we began to struggle to stem the tide of goals against.

As we reach the latter part of the season Merson has now realised the error of his ways and, away from home, he has managed to find a formation that makes us hard to break down.

He admits that at the start of his first managerial season he has made errors and that he intends to learn from them. This is the art of a good manager.

Someone who has seen and admitted to their errors is well on the way to achieving success. This is the type of man i want to see in charge of our football club.

Merson is open, refreshingly honest and most of all, willing and eager to learn.

As long as that remains the case he will have my full support.

Good on you gaffer.
