Last updated : 27 December 2005 By Andy Van Hagen

Beira Mar are the club of Aveiro from northern Portugal. Rich in history they have represented Portugal in European Competition. Founded in 1922 they have enjoyed the majority of their time in the Super Liga but last season they were relegated and now top Division Two with 31 points.

Beira Mar benefited from Portugal winning the right to host the European Championships in 2004.

They left their old stadium which had a capacity of 14,000 for Estadio Muncipal de Aviero Mario Duarte which translates into English as The Mario Duarte Muncipal Stadium of Aviero.

The stadium has quickly become a local landmark and is very colourful to represent the colour of the local fishing and seaweed collecting boats. The stadium is a bit of a contrast compared to Bescot Stadium both in terms of location and size

The stadium cost £28.5 million and is a 31,498 all seater venue which is part of the City Park area which includes a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and 6 hotels. The stadium hosted the Czech Rep Vs Latvia and Holland Vs Czech Republic in the European Championships.

Averio is a charming city which lies on the edge of a lagoon. The city has been compaired to Venice as it is disected into many parts by the canals.

The aim for this season is to get back into the Super Liga where the team can then aim to bring European football to Averio.  The Super Liga is a very competitive one.  Teams are always having to look over their shoulder as 4 teams are relegated each season with only 18 sides making up the league.
