Millwall Review Dec 09

Sadlad's away day reviewWalsall were forced into making two changes at The Den. Sam Parkin came in for the suspended Troy Deeney and Peter Till was drafted in for the injured Steve Jones. Millwall had several key players out and this gave striker Steve Morison the chance to shine with Neil Harris still out. Some Walsall fans were still making their way to their seats at the kick off, due to severe motorway hold ups on the way down.

On five minutes Ashley Grimes lined up a shot on goal which was well blocked by captain Mark Hughes. In a further attack just after this the home side had a loud penalty appeal turned down. On seven minutes Walsall won their first corner and as a result of Peter Till's outswinger, Manny Smith scored a well taken goal inside the box beating his marker to shoot home.Walsall were making most of the early running and at times got their passing game going. Darren Byfield had a shot on target on 23 minutes but was saved by home goalkeeper David Forde.

Mark Hughes got in another timely block  from Ashley Grimes and he and Manny Smith were continuing their fine understanding and looking pretty solid. However Millwall got more and more into the game and were beginning to look dangerous when going forward. Danny Schofield tested Clayton Ince and an effort from wide man Dave Martin cleared the bar. Darren Byfield, booed throughout the game by the home fans, found himself on a one-on-one with the keeper but shot straight at him when it seemed certain he would go on and increase Walsall's lead.

Millwall started the second half brightly, winning two early  corners and on 52 minutes Mark Hughes was rightly booked for a challenge on Grimes. Six minutes later the Lions were rewarded for all their pressure with a well taken goal from Steve Morison who gave Ince no chance. On 75 minutes, the Millwall groundstriker only signed from Stevenage in the summer, got his second goal of the game shooting past the advancing Ince. By now the home side had introduced Jason Price in place of Grimes and Lewis Grabban on for Dave Martin. Jamie Vincent came on for Netan Sansara and with 13 minutes to go Alex Nicholls was finally on for Till.

There seemed little or no way back into this game for Walsall  with little goal threat and attempts on target. Steve Jones was sorely missed and Millwall had contained Byfield well in the second period. They also kept an eye on Nicholls who to be fair didn't have much time to shine. With five minutes of the game left Millwall brought on their third substitute Adam Butler on for Marc Laird. By now though the game was slipping away from Walsall but full marks to the home side for the way they clawed their way back into the game and their impressive home form continues. Walsall now find themselves in tenth spot following two successive defeats. The stats from this game showed that Millwall had 9 attempts on target compared to Walsall's  4 and Saddlers were indebted to Ince for some smart saves. The corners total was 7 to Millwall compared to just 4 from Walsall. There was plenty of effort from Saddlers but little cutting edge. Disappointing.
