Away Day Review - Stourbridge

Away Day PreviewEarly play saw a shot from Troy Deeney comfortably saved by the home keeper Stuart Brock. The Glass Boys replied with a shot themselves which was comfortably saved by Clayton Ince. Then came a needless melee in the centre of the pitch as the home players reacted to a foul by Rhys Weston but thankfully the referee delt with the situation sensibly and just had a word with the full back.

Both sides were creating chances. Manny Smith blocked a shot that was on target and Brock saved bravely at the feet of Byfield. Saddlers forced several corners and were trying to play their way to force a lead and were rewarded when in-form man Steve Jones cut in from the right and drove a fierce shot into the top of the net giving Brock no chance.

Ince was called upon to make two smart saves as the half drew to a close. A swerving free kick beat the wall but the big man got down well to save then just after Sean Evans drilled a goal-bound shot that the keeper turned round for a corner by his post.

The Saddlers were attacking the end where their 490 travelling fans were housed and thought their heroes had increased their lead when Matt Richards hit a shot that Darren Byfield turned in with his chest from close range only for the linesman to rule offside.

Byfield, full of energy throughout the game, drilled a shot into the side netting and Troy Deeney placed a header wide when he should have done better.Stourbridge had chances at their end too and really made a mockery of the four divisions gap between the teams as they were searching for the goal to draw level.

Stourbridge had two claims for penalties waved away in the second period and were both for handball. First Manny Smith and then Mark Hughes made contact with their arms as they got in the way of goal-bound shots. Luckily for Saddlers the referee didn't blow.

The Walsall fans were looking to the bench to see a few changes to try and seal the game and finally saw local lad Alex Nicholls replace the hard-working Deeney and Peter Till on for Richards. Nicholls almost increased Saddlers lead with a great strike that clipped the bar and a minute later had a shot saved by the keeper. Stourbridge kept plugging away and the final whistle brought relief for Walsall who did just enough to win this cup tie and the Saddlers fans gave the hosts a great ovation to recognise not only the brave display they did on the day against a League One side but also to acknowledge the magnificent cup run that got them to Round One for the first time in their 133 year history.
