Palmer wants to be a winger

New Gillingham signing Chris Palmer has told Gillingham manager Mark Stimson he wants to be a winger.

Stimson told Sky Sports: "We know that he can play in four positions, but he has stayed behind in training to work on one position and he prefers to play as a winger, so we've tried him out on the right for a game and on the left for another and he has done well in both.

"It is great to have someone like that in the squad because we haven't got a big squad here and so for him to be able to fill into a number of roles when called upon is very handy."

At Walsall Chris Palmer probably suffered from being the easy option to move around the team, like Richard Taundry. As a result he would play one match right back, the next left wing, then swapping to the right wing before filling in at left back the next. While he could do a job he didnt look natural in the full back slots, despite playing the majority of his games there.

His stand-out game at Walsall was probably at home Vs Northampton, that day he played left wing and scored a delightful strike. At full back he would be classed as an 'attacking' full back at best so it seems Gillingham are giving him the chance to make his claim for the spot he feels best suited.
