Millwall fans worried about Byfield leaving

Last updated : 04 June 2007 By Andy Van Hagen
'I am committed to Millwall -and I want everyone to know that,' That's what Byfield said just last month.

'I will continue to stretch my every fibre for the cause of this club. I'm enjoying my time here, I'm enjoying the lads and if we make some good signings in the summer we are capable of winning League One, never mind reaching the play-offs or winning automatic promotion.

'All the fans have been asking me if I'm leaving. I've heard people saying the club can't afford my wages.

'The fans will not see me ask for a move. And I have not put a transfer request in.'

A month later and the fans from the New Den are worried Byfield's future is not in London. First rumours of a move back to the Midlands! And now the striker is being linked with Oldham Athletic. Either way, the speculation is not welcome down south. In his first season Byfield scored 16 goals in 32 starts for Millwall, the most productive tally of his career to date.
