'Betterbet' bookmakers have dropped former gambling addict Paul Merson from its advertising campaign after they had received 'lots' of complaints.

Merson has fought a well-documented gambling addiction and on BBC Radio 5 Live's Richard Bacon Show, Managing Director Ian Hogg said: 'We've obviously caused some offence to people and we are pulling the campaign.

The offer had been made to Merson at a social event. However with the subsequent withdrawal of the campaign the betting firm are likely to be delighted with the coverage received from the deal.

Merson has been reported to have lost £7 million through betting and once lost £30,000 on a scorecast bet.
