Smith arrived at Tannadice as a free agent and has been offered a short-term deal until January after impressing. Since leaving Bristol City the midfielder has been without a club but has had a number of trials with English clubs.
The Dundee United player-manager said: "He has a good pedigree, is fit and has a good left foot. We'll see if he accepts the offer."
Despite Smith being one of a number of Paul Merson January 2006 loan signings, he was one of a few, if not the only one, that was better than the players he was replacing.
