Leeds run ended - report

Last updated : 04 November 2007 By Andy Van Hagen
Leeds United's 13-match unbeaten run was wrecked by Carlisle as the Cumbrians came from a goal down at a packed Brunton Park to win 3-1.

Joe Garner was the hero for the home side, rising highest at the near post in the 70th minute to nod in Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's cross after a short corner to make it 2-1.

That gave Carlisle a lead they scarcely deserved after Leeds had dominated in an entirely one-sided first half.

The visitors should have been out of sight by half-time but instead went in at the break with just a single goal, thanks to ex-Carlisle loanee Jermaine Beckford.

With Leeds piling on the pressure, the home defence twice failed to clear the ball and Beckford was on hand to coolly slot the ball across Keiren Westwood from 12 yards.

Earlier Sebastian Carole had a shot headed off the line by Peter Murphy and Jonathon Douglas' curling effort was tipped over the bar by Westwood.

Beckford should have given Leeds the lead but his close-range flick from David Prutton's shot was palmed away by the brilliant Westwood.

For an hour Leeds dominated before Simon Hackney's thunderbolt volley brought Carlisle level.

Bridge-Wilkinson's corner was only half-cleared and, after a touch to steady himself, Hackney unleashed an unstoppable drive past Casper Ankergren and into the bottom corner.

Leeds tried in vain to respond and were left broken-hearted when Garner headed home a second, sending the majority of the 16,668 crowd wild with delight.

And with Leeds now pushing for an equaliser, Carlisle's defence held firm and Bridge-Wilkinson nearly netted with a first-time shot from the edge of the box that drifted just wide.

But Leeds were finally sent on their way in stoppage time when Bridge-Wilkinson rounded two tired defenders near the corner flag and curled in a perfect low drive from a tight angle past Ankergren
