Hodgson explained to the club's official website: "We spoke to the player's representative and got their financial conditions and they were way out of our league. He is still contracted to Sheff Utd and earning a very big sum of money and we could not possibly afford to bring him in. I'm not saying that we didn't want to, we just simply couldn't afford to. His wages would relate to four players wages."
Sheffield United currently have NINE first team forwards on their books, hence the reason why the striker will leave the club this summer.
